Tips for a more efficient move blog

Stress-free tips for your next move

  1. Create a plan, make a checklist, and do your best to stay on schedule. Everyone’s moving timeline will look different. Make sure you consider each factor of what makes your move unique and give yourself ample time to complete moving tasks. Another aspect of your plan is setting a budget for your move. Use the critical events on your checklist to identify areas of cost. This will help you determine if you can purchase new materials or need to find used boxes, and if you can afford to hire movers or make it another DIY move. Hiring professional movers can make a world of difference and let you focus on all the other details. Schedule your move with a company you can trust.
  2. Make a list of who you need to notify of your move and send out notices PRIOR to actually moving to avoid it being one more thing for you think about as you are unpacking and settling in at your new place.
  3. Declutter and donate as much as possible before packing to avoid the hassle of moving unwanted items. Measure your bigger furniture pieces before moving day to ensure each item will fit in the layout of the new home. If there’s no room for it at the destination, donate it as soon as possible to get it out of your space.
  4. Chip away at packing day by day. During the month before your move, try to pack for at least an hour a day leading up to moving day. You will be glad to have gotten it all done instead of waiting until the last possible minute. The last thing you want is to add more stress to an already stressful life event by leaving things for the last minute and overwhelming yourself.
  5. Pack boxes correctly! This one can make a huge difference. Firstly, make sure you are using the right size boxes (smaller boxes for heavier items such as books, medium size boxes for clothes & shoes, larger boxes for pillows and blankets). Do not leave any empty space at the top of the box so it doesn’t crush during moving. When packing your boxes, use plenty of packing paper or cushioning material to protect the things you’re boxing up, put heavier items on the bottom, and lighter items on top.
